How to Check Your Teenager Actually Understands Their AI-Assisted Homework
2026-08-28 · Holo Academy · 8 min read
Five questions, ten minutes, no technical knowledge needed — how to tell whether your teenager owns their AI-assisted work or is just delivering it.
Frequently asked questions
How can I tell if my child used AI for their homework?
Detection tools are unreliable and turn the conversation adversarial. A better approach is to stop trying to detect use and start verifying understanding: ask your child to explain the work out loud, unscripted, including how they checked it. Someone who understands the work can answer; someone who only delivered it cannot.
What questions should I ask about AI-assisted work?
Ask what they were trying to find out, what they expected the answer to be, what they did to check it, which part they are least sure about, and what they would change if one line turned out to be wrong. These five questions take about ten minutes.
Should I do this every time?
No. Once a week on one piece of work is enough to establish the habit. Doing it on everything turns a learning routine into surveillance, which reliably drives AI use out of sight.
