AI Literacy for Teenagers: A Parent’s Guide to What Actually Matters

Most teenagers already use AI daily. What AI literacy really means, what the research shows, and how to judge a programme before you pay.
Frequently asked questions
What is AI literacy for teenagers?
AI literacy is the ability to decide what to ask an AI system for, judge whether its answer is trustworthy, check it against evidence, and take responsibility for the final decision. It is a judgement skill, not a list of tools or prompts to memorise.
At what age should a child learn AI literacy?
Any age at which a child is already using AI. Common Sense Media found 81% of 9–12 year olds and 92% of 16–17 year olds already interact with AI, so the practical starting point is when use begins, not when a curriculum says so.
Does learning AI literacy require coding?
No. Coding is one useful medium for making AI output testable, because code either runs or fails. But the core skills — framing a task, checking a claim, deciding what to trust, and explaining the decision — transfer across subjects without any programming.
How can I tell whether an AI programme is any good?
Ask what the learner has to produce that AI cannot produce for them. A serious programme ends in something the learner has to defend out loud, unscripted: their reasoning, their checks, and the limits of what they know.
